Written by Mike Ho Updated Nov. 18, 2025

Visiting Guiyang for the first time? Wondering how to make the most of your time? As the transportation hub of Guizhou, Guiyang serves as the starting point for most visitors' Guizhou journeys.

Guiyang's Location Map - Where Is It in Guizhou?

Located in central Guizhou, Guiyang is surrounded by famous attractions such as Huangguoshu Waterfall and Baling River Bridge. And it is also within easy reach of popular destinations like Kaili, Zhenyuan, and Xijiang.

But don't just treat it as a transit stop. Guiyang has plenty to offer on its own.

Guiyang city has numerous attractions. To help you quickly understand the distribution of major attractions, we have listed the must-visited sites in the following map.

  • Qingyan Ancient Town: It is a Ming and Qing Dynasty military fortress with a history of over 600 years. You could climb up the well-preserved stone walls to enjoy a panoramic view of the town's dark-tiled roofs and the distant mountains.
  • Huangguoshu Waterfall: It is Guizhou's most famous natural landmark. Located just 2 hours away by car, it's easily accessible for a day trip. Learn more about how to visit Huangguoshu Waterfall.
  • Jiaxiu Pavilion: This ancient pavilion is most stunning after the lights are turned on at dusk. The best viewing and photo spots are on the opposite riverbank and the nearby floating bridge.
  • Qingyun Night market: This is Guiyang's most vibrant night market. Here you'll find a dazzling array of food stalls and craft shops. Don't miss the chance to taste authentic local specialties like Siwawa (DIY rice wraps), glutinous rice dishes.
  • Zhenfeng Traditional Paper-making: If you finish your visit to Huangguoshu Waterfall early, you can take an hour's drive to Zhenfeng County to experience traditional papermaking. The rural areas here still preserve ancient papermaking techniques, where locals use tree bark, cactus, and other natural materials to make paper.
  • Baling River Bdridge: Near the Huangguoshu Waterfall (15 minutes drive), you can also witness one of the world's highest long-span bridges. Here, you can challenge yourself with bungee jumping, stroll along a glass walkway, and marvel at the magnificent mountain and river views from above the clouds.

Traveling Around Guizhou from Guiyang

To ensure a relaxed pace, I recommend spending at least two nights in Guiyang. Dedicate one day to exploring the city's attractions and another to visiting Guizhou's most famous site - Huangguoshu Waterfall.

From Guiyang, you can continue to Kaili to experience the rich ethnic culture. Then head to Rongjiang to watch the unique rural football matches ("Village Super League").

Below is a recommended Guizhou itinerary from Guiyang:

Day 1: Arrive in Guiyang and check in. Visit Jiaxiu Pavilion to admire this iconic landmark and its stunning night views.

Day 2: Take a day trip from Guiyang to Huangguoshu Waterfall, with a stop at Balinghe Bridge along the way. Return to Guiyang in the evening.

Day 3: Explore the Ming Dynasty ancient city wall in Qingyan Ancient Town for panoramic views before heading to Kaili (2 hours' drive).

Day 4: Visit Xijiang Miao Village. You could watch traditional Miao dance performances, participate in a Long Table Banquet with toast ceremonies, and enjoy the village's enchanting night scenery.

Day 5: Take a 1.5-hour drive to Rongjiang. Visit Dali Dong Village, and in the evening, experience the lively "Village Super League" football match.

Day 6: Return to Guiyang or continue to your next destination. (Rongjiang has direct high-speed rail connections to Guilin and Kunming)

Where to Stay in Guiyang?

When staying in Guiyang, there are two main areas to choose from: Guanshanhu District (the new urban center) and the Old City (Nanming/Yunyan Districts), each with distinct characteristics.

For convenience and vibrant nightlife, we recommend staying in the Old City. It is closer to major attractions and offers diverse dining options with excellent transportation links.

  • Old City (Nanming/Yunyan Districts): Located in the city center, this area offers a wide range of options from star-rated hotels to budget chains and unique guesthouses. Key attractions such as Qianling Mountain Park, Jiaxiu Pavilion (for night views), and Qingyun night market are just 10–20 minutes away by car.
  • Guanshanhu District: As Guiyang's new central business district, it features upscale hotels like Hilton and Hyatt. However, it is farther from popular attractions such as Jiaxiu Pavilion and Qianling Mountain Park - about 30–40 minutes by car and offers fewer nightlife options.

Here are two recommended hotels in the Old City:

  • Sofitel Guiyang Hunter: Situated in the heart of the city, it boasts stunning panoramic views overlooking the landmark Jiaxiu Pavilion and Nanming River. A 10-minute walk will take you to key sights like Jiaxiu Pavilion.
  • Kempinski Hotel Guiyang: Also centrally located and adjacent to the large Hunter City Plaza shopping mall, it is just a 10-minute walk from attractions such as Jiaxiu Pavilion.

Guiyang's Authentic Food & Where to Eat

Guiyang cuisine is known for its sour and spicy flavors. The most iconic dishes include sour fish soup and sour beef hotpot. Beyond these main courses, local snacks like Siwawa (DIY rice wraps) and Changwang Noodles are also must-tries.

Here are some great places to enjoy local food:

  • Erqi Road Snack Street (best visited in the morning): Offers the widest variety of snacks in a clean environment. You can find Siwawa, tofu balls, and many other local delights here.
  • Qingyun Night Market: A supper paradise loved by locals, with a lively atmosphere. It's packed with grilled skewers, roasted fish, and all kinds of specialty snacks.
  • Lao Kaili Sour Fish Soup (restaurant): The most famous brand in Guiyang for sour fish soup, with multiple branches across the city. It offers an authentic taste of this signature dish, saving you the trouble of searching for the best spot.

How to Get to Guiyang

Guiyang is well-connected to major Chinese cities by both air and high-speed rail. From entry hubs like Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai, there are daily direct flights (approx. 2–3 hours) and high-speed train options (e.g., Shanghai to Guiyang takes about 8–9 hours).

Guiyang also now offers international routes from cities such as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, with occasional direct flights taking around 4 hours.

In addition, rail connections between Guiyang and popular nearby tourist cities are convenient. Direct high-speed trains run from Guiyang to Kunming, Guilin, Chengdu, and Chongqing, with travel times of approximately 2–3 hours.

Guiyang Weather & Best Time to Visit

Jiaxiu pavilionJiaxiu pavilion

Guiyang enjoys its prime travel season from March to October. During this period, the city maintains cool average temperatures around 20°C. Even at the height of summer, temperatures seldom exceed 32°C. You could comfortably escape the intense heat seen in other parts of the country.

This is also when waterfalls are at their most powerful, and the mountains are lush and green. Although summer is the rainy season, most rainfall occurs in the evenings or at night, rarely affecting daytime activities.

From late November, Guiyang transitions into winter, with cooler temperatures (5–15°C) and increased overcast days. The humidity can make it feel quite chilly, but the upside is significantly fewer tourists, offering a more tranquil experience at major attractions. Learn more about Guizhou weather information.
